What says Christmas more than an old lonely man with a bandaged hand who spends all his time salting the sidewalks of the neighborhood and shoveling snow? Easy, a man that fits the above who also murders his entire family and than uses the salt to turn his bodies into mummies.
This character is available to all of us in Home Alone, contrary to the alleged perpetrator’s claims of innocence to the charges of familicide by snowshovel. Old Man Marley, or the "South Bend Shovel Slayer," has been an eerie symbol of Lincoln Blvd. for years. A lonely, scraggly old man, solitary in his behavior. And what people don’t understand, they fear. They fear Marley. And with good reason. Everyone in the area knows what he did, yet the evidence just isn’t there to put the old man away.

He claims to have an 11 year old granddaughter, a redheaded girl in the choir. He claims his relationship with his son is simply a bad one, and that he didn’t murder his family. There are conflicting stories all over this film.
Word has it that he slaughtered his family, the police couldn’t do anything about it. This is the story accepted as fact by the majority of his neighbors. Some reliable sources are supporters of this theory. "Back in ‘58, he murdered his whole family and half the people on the block…with a snow shovel. He’s been hiding out in this neighborhood ever since," says Buzz McAllister, local historian.
"There’s a lot of things going around about me, but none of it’s true," claimed Marley while at a church, where he has been seen several times alone and talking with little boys.

"It’ll just be a matter of time before he does it again," says Buzz.
Word has it he has been associating himself with a family, no official word is out as to whether or not it is his. Marley has also earned some face in the local neighborhood after he helped save a young lad in the grips of some local burglars.

There's fifteen people in this house, and you're the only one who has to make trouble.
